M. Mann: 'Modern Texts for a Modern World: reading and writing for pre-intermediate students'

In this presentation, we'll look at how the needs of students are changing in terms of what – and how – they read and write. Websites, blogs, social networking and text messages are now an established part of the communication world of our students. With examples from Laser A1+ and Laser A2, the two new lower levels in the Laser series, we'll look at how we can successfully incorporate the reading and writing of these modern text types into what we do in the classroom.

L.Clandfield: 'Changing the Map of English Grammar'

If grammar is part of the landscape of a language, then our grammar books and coursebooks provide the map. But what happens when the landscape changes? This talk looks at recent changes in English grammar as represented by the ‘maps’ in our field. We'll look at how spoken English, global English and technology are all having an effect on how English is shifting.


J. Allison: ’S.M.A.R.T. Homework’

As the proverb says, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” Or can you?Business English students usually fall into two categories: those who do their homework, and those who don’t. Those who ‘do’ faithfully produce whatever we ask them for, week in, week out. But what about those who ‘don’t’? This talk looks at some ways of making homework ‘S.M.A.R.T.’ – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant/realistic and time-bound.  Using examples of homework assignments from all levels of ‘The Business’, as well as different techniques of dealing with homework in class, we will consider how we can encourage students not only to do their homework, but also to find it useful and even enjoyable.
