History and the Culture Studies at the University of Cagliari, Sardinia

Between 30 April and 5 May, Professor Christopher Korten delivered a series of lectures to Master’s and Doctoral students in History and the Culture Studies at the University of Cagliari, Sardinia.

The topics were the British Empire and National Identity. He stressed the methodological complexities of writing a history of ’empire’, underscoring the active debate between direct and indirect empire; that is, colonies under direct rule versus areas where Britain had exercised economical or political influence. Towards the end of the week, he discusseed the importance and relevance today for the subject of History, especially in forging national identities and histories, which can in turn affect a government’s policy, for example towards immigrants.
