Despite geographical remoteness, Russia has a long history of academic interest to Southeast Asia. This chapter explains how Southeast Asian studies in Russia managed to take an institutionalized shape and persist throughout several historical periods since the late 19th century up to nowadays despite geographical, geopolitical and other constraints.
